Automated feeding

The process of feeding the animals takes up approx. 20% of the time you spend working in the dairy cattle barn. Apart from milking, this is the process that takes up the bulk of the working time at a dairy farm. Automated feeding allows the farmer to ease his workload, save time and increase his flexibility.

While the solution that is currently used most commonly in the real world is rail-guided mixer wagons, feeding conveyors and self-propelled mixer wagons are popular as well.

The text below will deal with the topic of rail-guided mixer wagons in more detail. This type of vehicle is composed of a feed hopper with scale system that is suspended from a rail. Power to the vehicle is supplied by batteries, a trailing cable or a supply rail with trailing contacts. The features of the vehicle (feed data, rations, frequency of the feedings) are commonly controlled by a computer mounted directly on the feed hopper. A stationary mixer wagon positioned near the feed table is used to complete the loading process of the rail-guided mixer wagon. The rail-guided dispenser wagon will then move along the feed table and present the feed. For more information on our stationary mixers, click here.

You should include the following factors in your decision to buy a system like this:

  • How wide is my feed table?
  • Do I want discharge to take place on both sides at the same time?
  • Is my barn tall enough to accommodate a rail system?
  • Is the load-bearing capacity of my ceiling sufficient to support such a system?
  • How can I set up the stationary feed loading system?
  • Do I require an additional concentrated feed container?
Our staff are able to give you competent answers to all of these questions.
